Works 1996 onwards | Pablo Luis González

These pieces are part of an open ended series, the departure being "Land of Poisoned Fear", painted in 1996 as a commemoration of the Chernobyl disaster.

They all refer to the land - as being a different concept from landscape: this work is not about landscape; a romantic approach to it, or the denial of such an approach - and the marks, traces and shadows left on it by us.

The underlying assumption here is that the "land" is an economic entity with a cultural construct as a mask, and it has been such since the very beginning of history. The dichotomy nature-culture is denied. As in most of my work, reminiscences of my personal history have been incorporated in the paintings: a glimpse caught from a plane of my home town as it prodded into the Pacific Ocean in the glow of the late afternoon sun, the flourish of a school uniform skirt, a little scrap of blue floating from years past ("I haven't forgotten, my love!"), yet this work is not autobiographical.

These are paintings of ideas as much as they are of the painted, and sculpted, surface. As such, these pieces have come to being in that space found between design and the free movement of the hand, the ideological and the accidental, the predetermined and the automatic gesture, the day and the dream time, the rocks and the winds.
