A long overnight express train snaked its way into Rome from Northern Italy, abandoning me in a rather undistinguished white architecture railway station in the middle of an ebullient throng, each individual clamouring for my attention: their taxis, hotels, hostels, restaurants, girls, being the best...

Self-assured pigeons meddling with unsuspecting passers-by; insolently languid cats pushing tourists aside so that they can lie in the warm sunshine; a proud face aware of her pristine beauty emerging from a crowd just to disappear a few seconds later; the vastness of Saint Peter's Square criss-crossed by an incessant multitude, all jostling as if they were to catch a glimpse of that white patriarchal figure leaning out of one of the windows; a girl's bottom clad in Levis 501 staring opposite the Vatican Museum with the shameless impudence of the young; German teenage girls being seduced by street portrait painters on the steps of Fontana di Trevi; a child climbing in wonder the steps of Piazza Spagna; Australian backpackers congregating at the foot of these steps, not sure of what to do next; the smouldering sun glaring from its bed in the photographic blueness of the sky; the layers of history yelling in almost every corner of the city, its Roman tectonic plate erupting unexpectedly on every available urban fissure; the rich golden aura of the Vatican with the extraordinary unevenness of the plaster on those walls covered by incredible frescoes...

Rome... city of lovers, mothers, dreams, ghosts...
