"Do you want my picture?" a fresh young face asked near the Duomo in Florence, the chaotic traffic on Via De' Cerretoni filling the air with its grotesque tones. Turning her head slightly back, a thin smile slipping between her lips, she waited for a few seconds as the camera was raised to the eye and, "Click!", she was gone, her smile and her hips following her steps. After that, Florence was all for me to grab, for a day and a half. Pigeons... pigeons... pigeons... owning the place, whatever the place is, Ponte Vecchio, surveying the sluggish crowd of backpackers, Florentines on their daily scrolls at the open markets, giggling German teenagers leaning over the parapets as the waters of the river Arno flow bored below... they have seen so much! Pietrasanta, on the Tuscan coast, the long gone figures of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth leaving their inprints on memories, attracted by the quarries of "holy stone" in nearby Carrara. Nowadays tourists, mostly British and German, rent the spacious villas in suburbia, Italian style, during the languid long summer, some having bought them.
